“Green” is quite the buzz word in many industry sectors these days and trade shows will not be left behind. For the custom booth provider what was once a world of heavy, all wood and metal construction is now a lightweight, aluminum and fabric playground. The trend is to go with portable and modular booths and booth components—they can pack down into smaller containers and weigh less – reducing the cost of shipping as well as the exhibit’s carbon footprint.
The trade show industry is the second highest producer of waste, behind construction. Convention centers and other hosts are beginning to focus on recycling, installing energy efficient lighting sources, and utilizing sustainable building materials. However, much more can be done to reduce the impact of our industry.
Quick ideas to bring shades of green into your exhibit:
- recyclable carpet and carpet padding and recycling
- biodegradable trash bags and wastebaskets made from 100% recycled materials
- online/CD distribution rather than paper
- energy efficient lighting
- recycling paper, ink cartridges, signage
- recycle steel and aluminum components
- retread tires on trucks
- recycle office supplies and equipment
- buy recycled, non-toxic, biodegradable office supplies
- program donating excess materials to schools, Habitat for Humanity, etc.
- provide cardboard-style wastebaskets and biodegradable liners
- run forklifts and other site vehicles on electric or LP natural gas
- use muslin or all cotton drape
- bamboo panel inserts for modular systems
- fabric graphics on recycled content material, use eco-friendly inks
- printing new graphics on previously used panels
- digital signage for meetings, schedules and message boards
- conscious shipping practices (don’t send what you won’t need or can’t purchase locally)
- consider eco-conscious promo and give-away options

As a home improvement contractor in Ma., I’m doing my best to reduce and reuse all the materials I come in to contact with. Many home improvement contractors around here are following in the same direction. Whether it’s energy replacement windows, or composite decking, or white flat roofs that highly reflect the sun.

That really shocking finding out that eco options trade shows where the bigest producers of waste and you of thought they would at least be at the four front of recycling starting with themselfs, great post and keep up the good work.

Good informative post. Will for sure keep this in mind in my future attendances to trade shows. Alot of whatyou mentioned I’ve never even thought of, but the digital versions of materials I started using a few years back and the feedback and results from using digital materials is actually better than with paper anyway – people rather give their emails to send the info to or get an url and read it whenever and wherever, than getting a piece of paper they’ll likely lose or throw away

Also, you can find promotional giveaways that are eco-friendly! That cuts down on a huge amount of waste if you consider all the products given away at every show!

Wow, interesting post for sure. I am enjoying your blog immensely. I have actually participated in many trade shows over the years and never realized how I was impacting the environment until lately. That was a very eye opening article. I now host a variety of websites that promote eco friendly home decor, one of which you mentioned in your post …bamboo shades. They are great natural design elements to any room as an actual shade or room divider and are fabulous alternatives to walls at trade shows! Well done gals!

Good info on greening up your tradeshow exhibit. Everyone can save a lot of money by educating themselves on the green building process before hiring a contractor, that’s for sure. The more people understand, the better they can communicate clearly with construction professionals and get the best value on their projects.

as a manufacturer of food tents, and trade show canopies over the course of the past 10 years we have taken great measures to ensure that we are producing the greenest products and manufacturing them as efficiently as possible.
Unfortunately everything eventually becomes landfill so the next step is to make a completely biodegradable products that will turn into mulch of dirt instead of landfill.
