The Green Business Benefits of Telecommuting

It seems that almost daily, there is a new company that is opening its doors with an eco-friendly platform. This is a good thing because it means that there are more and more people who are becoming aware of and sensitive to the needs of the environment.

When exploring the reasons why green businesses would benefit from hiring people who telecommute, probably one of the most obvious ones is that when people are working from home, they are not using gas to drive into the office and the less emissions that are in the air, the better it is for everyone. However, there are actually several other reasons why telecommuting is a good idea to consider:

It conserves energy all the way around. Aside from the fact that when people are working from home, they are not using their cars to get to an office, when there is an actual office that they are driving to, think about all of the energy that building requires on a daily basis; working from home cuts down on the expenses that it takes to keep the electricity and water on at an office space.

It keeps workers safer. Did you know that there are approximately 5.25 million driving accidents that happen in the United States on an annual basis? The less people who are on the highways and byways (especially during the hours when so many other people are as well), the less chance there is of an accident taking place.

It can increase productivity. There are a lot of reports that support the fact that when people work in settings where they are comfortable, they tend to get more work done. It can’t get more comfortable than being in sweats and sitting in your own living room or home office. So, as long as you hire people who have the discipline to manage their time wisely, it can definitely be to your benefit to have them work from home.

It keeps job turnover down. Speaking of people being happier working from home, did you know that one of the main reasons why individuals tend to change jobs is not so much because of the position or even their employer, but because they don’t like the location of where they work? It might be because it’s too far from home or the traffic is inconvenient or it prevents them from easily taking care of other matters before or after work. Whether your company focuses on careers for healthcare or education or technology, you can keep an employee longer if they are able to work from their own house.

It encourages a sense of family and community. One of the absolute best things about the eco-friendly movement is that it encourages people to do things within their community to make this world a better place. When people are able to telecommute, they are able to spend more time with their families. As a direct result, together they can devote more time to volunteering and serving their neighborhood and communities, just in the time that they spare in driving back and forth from work alone. Yes, just that additional hour or two can make all of the difference in the world and at the end of the day, isn’t that what being “green” is all about? Definitely.

Thanks! I agree, I could never go back to a 9-5 job I always had to ask for time off to take care of personal business, now as long as my work gets done I have no one to answer to but myself!
