Applying the Principles of Feng Shui to Your Office

It’s not uncommon for those who work in the professional sector to spend long hours at the office. While it may be simply a part of the culture we live in at this point, spending too much time in an office environment can be unhealthy, especially given the fact that many business owners don’t take the time to add balance to their office space.

Feng Shui certainly gets tossed around quite a bit as a term, but there’s no getting around the fact that it can have a huge a impact on the moods of you and your employees. A happy team is a productive team, after all, and it’s important to always keep this in mind. Fortunately, you don’t have to make a bunch of changes at once – gradually shifting towards a healthier, more serene work environment is easier than it might seem.

Start With Your Own Desk

Presidential Suite - Private StudySometimes it’s best to start with what you know you already have to work with. Instead of taking a macro approach, it’s always wise to ease into the concept on a smaller scale. For one, paying attention to the desk itself is essential. Computer desks are available in all shapes and sizes, and the one that is right for you will depend heavily on personal preference. Once you’ve picked it out, it’s time to consider positioning. According to the principles of Feng Shui, you can maintain dominance and control by positioning your desk in the exact opposite corner from your doorway. Finally, be sure to keep things on and around your desk as tidy as possible; if it doesn’t scream “harmony,” it’s time to make some changes.

Turn to Plants

It may seem like common sense to add plants to an office space, but if you’ve ever been in a white-walled space that has little to no redeeming factors, you’ve likely experienced how much of a difference even the smallest amount of plant-life can have on a space. Still, many business owners simply don’t have the time to keep up on an entire office’s worth of plants or don’t want to spend the money to hire a professional service to come in. One of the best way to add an element of Feng Shui to your office without having to actually do much work at all is to purchase bamboo plants. Bamboo is extremely low maintenance, inexpensive and adds a calming quality to any room it’s placed in.

Add Natural Wood

As far as building materials go, it doesn’t get more earthy than natural wood. The right combination of woods can add balance and harmony to any office space and can help to distract from what might otherwise not be a stellar build-out while improving your mood. You can incorporate wood into your office in a variety of ways, including using it to either build or otherwise embellish desks, chairs, or even as an ornamental piece for your reception area. There’s a reason why reclaimed wood is becoming a business in and of itself – it adds that special something that newer, more sterile building materials simply can’t provide.

Feng Shui doesn’t have to be outside of your reach, and it’ll no doubt help to make your workday just a bit less stressful.
