WordPress is a wonderful platform, back in it’s early onset I knew this was going to be the medium I wanted to work with at Eco-Office Gals. Unlike a static, HTML site of old, it grows with you, it grows with our online needs.
Growth also means change. While some plugins & themes are tried and true, many are not. Plugins you installed years ago may become out of date, hindering the functionality of your website or causing a security issue. Others may work ok, but there may be new ones out there doing a better job. Some features may have been a built in function of your site, but that function is being depreciated and replaced as a plugin you may not have installed.
Great things are happening with WordPress and if you are running the same old, same old you did when you started your WP site you may be missing out.
Eco-Office Gals is creating a WordPress/StudioPress “facelift for 2013” offer. Since I work nearly exclusively with the Genesis Framework many of these are Genesis/StudioPress specific, but analyzing your WordPress site occasionally applies to anyone running on the platform.
What’s new to you:
- Depreciating widgets: Genesis enews & updates and Genesis Twitter Feed is going away and being replaced with plugins. You need to install the new plugins going forward.
- Facebook: Where did your Like Box go? I’ve had people ask me. My best guess, since Facebook took over the scene with total WP to FB integration, 3rd party FB plugin developers have lost interest in maintaining there plugins, removing them and going with the Facebook integration seems to be a good move for me and my clients.
- Jetpack: I have a growing appreciation for this plugin. It’s hosted on WP.com so it’s light on your site and eliminates the need for several individual plugins, forms, social sharing features, etc.
- Google +: I don’t really “get G+ yet, but when sources like Chris Brogan & Copyblogger tell me claiming Google Authorship is the thing to do, I do it.
