Working Online: What is Really Needed?

2010-04-22The economy is slowing recovering but that doesn’t mean that every industry is coming back in the same shape it was in before. Many positions are coming gone and are probably never coming back because there are more efficient ways to perform those tasks. New positions have been created in various industries. In a number of industries all across the nation, people are choosing to work from home, performing their jobs remotely. If you would like to join the millions who are working from home, there are several things you should know first.

Properly Research the Types of Available Jobs

Before you turn in your resignation at your traditional job, it is important to know what kind of online, alternative job you might be interested in. Interest does not equal ability, however, so you have to keep in mind a realistic view of getting these jobs in the first place and what they pay. First and foremost you should understand that there are rarely any type of benefits with online jobs. You will be considered an independent contractor, technically your own boss so those costs, (medical insurance and others, for instance) will be all your own. You should also have an idea of the going pay rates and how reliable your clients are. There are horror stories about freelance writers and others who work from home who are never paid for all of their hard work.

People who are just starting out will not get the bigger paying positions in their early days so it might not be possible to base an entire income on these positions right away.

How to Get People Interested in Your Services

If you are going to have steady work, you have to have a number of clients to work with. Whether you are writing, doing graphic design or selling crafts, you have to advertise your services or your products. One of the best ways to generate interest and provide information about what you can offer is with a web site. However, since you are trying to establish yourself as a professional, you will want to have a site that sets the right tone and delivers the right message. Using a professional website builder for business prospects is a great way to make sure that your site is competitive with the others in the industry. While you want to be able to say you are the “best” at what you do you cannot say that you are the only one vying for that title.

As you complete projects, ask former and ongoing clients to write testimonials for you and, include those on your website so that prospective customers can see them. While some people are okay with hiring new or aspiring people for certain jobs, they are reluctant to give them very important tasks or to offer them very high pay. Once you have a solid portfolio and the confidence of others behind you, you can command higher prices and enjoy a more secure lifestyle.
